  • License Holders: Inspector Non-Elective Course Changes

    On September 1, 2021 inspectors are required to complete a new 8 Hour Inspector Legal & Ethics and Standards of Practice Review course as part of the 32 hours of inspector continuing education (CE) required to renew or activate a license.  

    This course will replace the two inspector non-elective CE courses, 4-hour Inspector Legal & Ethics, and 4-hour Standards of Practice Review course that will expire on August 31, 2021.

  • Business Entities Inactivation Update - What Happened?

    On June 2, 2021, TREC inactivated broker business entity licenses in error.  Upon discovery of the error, staff worked to resolve the issue and all licenses were restored by Friday, June 4, 2021.

  • UPDATE: Business Entity Licenses Restored

    Broker business entity licenses were inactivated in error on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. The issue is resolved, and all licenses are restored.

  • From the Chair - Inspector Committee - June 2021

    The TREC Commissioners met on May 3 in Austin in person for the first time in over a year.  It was nice to see everyone in person once again.  Tony Slagle presented the Commissioners with a legislative update, which included two inspector-related bills.

  • Proposed and Adopted Rules from the May 2021 Commission Meeting

    During the May Commission meeting, rules relating to the Inspector Standards of Practice (SOP) were proposed. These proposed revisions are the product of many meetings of the Inspector SOP subcommittee and the work of the entire Texas Real Estate Inspector Committee. The Commission also adopted a rule which helps streamline the process for petitioning the Commission for the adoption of rules. See the full agenda and mate

  • From the Executive Director - May 2019

    I am thrilled to be able to lead with some great news – because of enhanced staffing, improved training, real-time flexibility in response management, and more precise phone system programming we’ve employed, in recent weeks the average hold times for calls received by the agency’s contact center are under five minutes! Also, the average for all of April was about five and a half minutes, so we are still improving. Our goal is to keep doing so methodically and sustainably.

    The Inspector Committee had a full agenda for its April meeting.  The meeting was accompanied by the newest appointments to the Inspector Committee, as well as the incoming General Counsel for the Real Estate Commission, Chelsea Buchholtz.  There was also significant representation from multiple trade associations and education providers as well.

    I would like to begin by publically welcoming the three new members to the Inspector Committee, who were appointed in February. Mike Morgan of Brownwood was appointed as a new inspector member, to serve a six-year term, and Robert John Daehn of Aransas Pass and Dave Motley of Garland were appointed as public members to serve two-year terms.

    Even without a legislative session, April is always a very busy month. So this year, that is especially true with our agency focused on the final steps of the Sunset review process as well.  We greatly appreciate the anticipated improvements this process will bring to the services we provide to the people of Texas and the license holders we also serve.

    Due to the amount of business we needed to conduct to both meet our obligations to advance the normal work of the Commission, and consider all of the matters highlighted in the agency’s Sunset Report, the Commission met for two days in February.  The Texas REALTORS Winter Meeting overlapped our dates, so we had several extra stakeholders in attendance – and they earned CE credit for attending!

    The IAC has been busy already this year.  Through a substantial amount of time and hard work, the Education Subcommittee has proposed, and the IAC approved recommending changes to how one can obtain a license in Texas.  Texas has had some of the strictest requirements for licensure of any state in the union.  The proposed number of hours to be eligible for a license will go down significantly, but the content of those courses will change as well.  Keep in mind that the intent here is not to l

    The Inspector Committee met on February 4. Among the business items taken up by the Committee was the election of the Committee officers for the upcoming Calendar year.  Lee Warren was elected as the chair of the Committee, Shawn Emerick was elected as vice-chair and Steven Rinehart was elected as secretary.  I would like to thank the outgoing officers for their leadership over the last year.

  • TREC Announces Extension For All License Holders Affected By Hurricane Harvey

    In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the Texas Real Estate Commission and the Texas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board (the Agency) extended all deadlines for two months for all license holders and applicants statewide with license expiration or application deadlines in August and September. This extension ended on October 31, 2017. 

  • New Commission Appointments Announced

    AUSTIN, TX - Governor Abbott has appointed three new members to the Texas Real Estate Commission; broker members, Jan Fite Miller and DeLora Wilkinson and a public member Micheal Williams with terms set to expire January 31, 2023. These new members will join the Commission for its next regular quarterly meeting in Austin on November 13, 2017. 

  • Testing Provider Closing Testing Centers Due To Hurricane

    Due to Hurricane Harvey, our testing provider, Pearson Vue, will be closing some of the sites in Texas over the next few days.  Site closures keep coming in, and they are reaching out to all candidates via email to let them know that their appointment will need to be rescheduled.

  • TREC Receives ARELLO Communications Award

    The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) is pleased to announce that the agency’s completely redesigned website has been recognized for excellence by the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO) with a 2017 Communication Award.  ARELLO is an international organization of real estate licensing agencies and individuals involved with regulation of the real estate industry globally.

  • Senate Confirms Appointments of Commission Members

    TREC is pleased to announce the Senate confirmation of Governor Abbott's appointments to the Commission on May 21, 2017. Broker member Bob Leonard of San Antonio, broker member Rayito Stephens of Houston and public member TJ Turner of Austin.

    The appointees will continue to serve the Commission and consumers of Texas until their terms expire. Read more on each of these appointees and the Commission on our "About the Commission" page.
