Education Provider Exam Pass Rates
TREC is required by law to set an exam pass rate benchmark that all approved qualifying education providers must meet to continue to offer qualifying courses. Prospective students may use this information to determine where to take qualifying courses.
The data is calculated monthly and determines the overall average first-time pass rate (OPR) for all students who have taken the licensing exam. The status of a provider is determined by calculating 80% of the current OPR and comparing that to the pass rate for a provider. For example, if the OPR for all providers is 60%, the minimum pass rate for any education provider to remain in good standing is 48%. In other words, 80% of the OPR equals the minimum pass rate.
(60% OPR x 80% = 48% Minimum Pass Rate)
If a student took the majority of his or her qualifying courses from the same provider in the two years prior to taking the exam for the first time, the student's exam results are counted and attributed to that provider.
Education providers must apply for re-approval every four years. When a provider seeks re-approval, the Commission uses their exam pass rate to determine if they are in good standing, subject to probation or subject to revocation. Education providers are also required to submit an annual fee application every year, at which time their exam pass rate is reviewed. If the pass rates are low at that time, TREC reminds them to be aware of their ranking.
Description of Rankings
In Good Standing
First-time pass rate of at least 80% of the OPR for that license category.
Subject to Probation
First-time pass rate between 50% and 79% of the OPR for that license type. A provider who is "Subject to Probation" when filing an application for subsequent approval will be placed on probation and reviewed at the time the provider's annual operating fee is due. A provider who is "Subject to Probation" at the time it submits the annual fee will remain on probation. If the provider is "In Good Standing" at the time it submits the annual fee it will be removed from probation.
Subject to Disapproval or Revocation
First-time pass rate below 50% of the OPR for that license type. A provider who is "Subject to Disapproval or Revocation" when filing an application for subsequent approval will be disapproved. A provider who is "Subject to Disapproval or Revocation" at the time it submits the annual fee will have its license revoked.
