The Commission in May adopted revisions to the Real Estate Brokerage and Property Management course approval forms. Beginning October 1, 2023, qualifying education providers may begin submitting course application forms to offer these revised courses.

What Changed?

Revisions to the Real Estate Brokerage course include an emphasis on the expectations a sponsored sales agent should have of their broker and the responsibilities of the sponsoring broker to the sales agent.

Revisions to the Property Management course remove references to commercial property management, include information related to commercial leasing, and emphasize residential property management in alignment with the Texas Real Estate Commission’s regulatory authority. The course is also renamed Residential Property Management.

Deadlines for Education Providers

Education providers who are currently approved to offer Real Estate Brokerage and Property Management have 12 months to revise classroom courses and 15 months to revise distance education courses.

Revised course approval forms will be posted to the TREC website on October 1, 2023. Education providers who would like to begin working on revisions sooner may access drafts of the forms starting on page 199 of the May Commission meeting materials.

Expiration of Existing Course Outlines

Existing classroom Real Estate Brokerage and Property Management course approval will expire September 30, 2024.

Existing distance education Real Estate Brokerage and Property Management course approval will expire December 31, 2024.

Once an education provider receives approval to offer one of the revised courses, their approval to offer the previously approved course will automatically expire.

Changes to SAE Requirements

Effective October 1, 2023, sales agents renewing their license for the first time—both active and inactive —are required to complete an approved 30-hour Real Estate Brokerage course as part of their 90 hours of Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE). Additional details regarding first time renewal requirements are available on the TREC website.
