The Broker Responsibility Advisory Committee (BRAC) met January 15. It held elections for officers and selected the following:

  • Ty Williams, chair
  • Brian Sales, vice chair
  • Marion Napoleon, secretary

BRAC members continued their discussion regarding the minimum experience points and education hours required to earn a broker’s license. Currently, 900 education hours are required to become a licensed broker; 630 of these hours are required to be in real estate-related education. If an applicant holds a bachelor’s degree or higher, the 630 hours of related education are satisfied, regardless of field of study. An applicant for a broker’s license must also have at least four years of active experience during the five years preceding the application, totaling 360 experience points.

Work in a Smaller Market? TREC’s Broker Responsibility Advisory Committee Wants to Hear From You

To address a concern that the education requirements may be difficult to satisfy without a bachelor’s degree, the committee is considering an option where an applicant’s active experience points beyond the minimum required for a license can be substituted for up to 300 hours of real estate-related education hours. You can find more information on this suggested alternative in the meeting materials, including examples of how additional experience points could be substituted. BRAC members also discussed how this option might impact license holders in market areas where there are fewer transactions a year versus large markets. If you work in a smaller real estate market in Texas, BRAC is seeking comments from you about the committee’s suggestion.

Email your comments, which will be shared with the committee to discuss at its next meeting on April 8.
