License Holders: Inspector Non-Elective Course Changes

On September 1, 2021 inspectors are required to complete a new 8 Hour Inspector Legal & Ethics and Standards of Practice Review course as part of the 32 hours of inspector continuing education (CE) required to renew or activate a license.  

This course will replace the two inspector non-elective CE courses, 4-hour Inspector Legal & Ethics, and 4-hour Standards of Practice Review course that will expire on August 31, 2021. 

Business Entities Inactivation Update - What Happened?

On June 2, 2021, TREC inactivated broker business entity licenses in error.  Upon discovery of the error, staff worked to resolve the issue and all licenses were restored by Friday, June 4, 2021.  For purposes of full disclosure, we wanted our license holders to know the details of what occurred and what we are doing to avoid any similar incident in the future. 

UPDATE: Business Entity Licenses Restored

Broker business entity licenses were inactivated in error on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. The issue is resolved, and all licenses are restored.

All business entity licenses have been updated and the TREC website should reflect the accurate status of your license. Business entities and agents can once again manage their sponsorships online as well. If you believe your license status is not correct please contact TREC.

Real Estate and Professional Inspector Application Changes Effective March 1 

The new inspector qualifying education and experience requirements for real estate and professional inspector licenses begin March 1, 2021. Applicants who have registered for qualifying courses prior to March 1, 2021, under the previous education requirements, will have until June 30, 2021, to complete all coursework and submit certificates with a completed application under those requirements. 

Prior to March 1, 2021 Professional Real Estate Inspector Requirements

A Professional Real Estate Inspector is a person who is trained and qualified to perform real estate inspections and who accepts employment to perform a real estate inspection for a buyer or seller of real property.  Professional inspectors may also supervise or sponsor Real Estate Inspectors and Apprentice Inspectors.

You have one year from the date your application is filed to meet all license requirements.  Once you have met all license requirements, TREC will send an active professional inspector license to you via email.

Temporary Allowance for New Texas Practicum Courses

New inspector pre-licensing education and experience requirements begin March 1, 2021.  The new experience requirement includes a 40 hour Texas Practicum, which must consist of a minimum of five complete and in-person inspections.  In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, TREC will grant a temporary allowance for on-site inspections to take place virtually, as long as the Practicum instructor conducts inspections live and on-site, and the instructor and students are able to interact with each other in real-time through both audio and video. 

Changes Coming to Inspector Education and Experience Requirements

The Commission adopted rules at the August meeting that implement significant changes to the education, experience, and exam requirements for real estate and professional inspectors.  These changes are a reflection of the Agency’s commitment to making pre-licensing requirements more impactful while minimizing undue burdens on new applicants entering the industry. 

TREC Launches Approved Course Search Tool

The Texas Real Estate Commission is pleased to announce the launch of our Approved Course Search tool.  Anyone can use this tool to search for currently approved qualifying or continuing education (CE) courses for real estate or inspector license holders.  The tools allows individuals to search for a specific provider or type of course using one or more search functions.  Locate a provider by searching their provider name, license number or all providers in the same city.  Search for courses by delivery method or the type of course, for example Legal Update I or Legal Update II.  This is an
