This position serves as both the executive director for the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) and the commissioner for the Texas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board (TALCB), hereinafter referred to as “executive director.” The executive director performs highly advanced administrative and organizational management activities and must be an experienced, established leader with a solid breadth of expertise. The position reports directly to both TREC and TALCB (each with 9 appointed members) and works under their direction with the latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment as determined by the commissioners and board members. The executive director serves at the will of the TREC commissioners.
Together, TREC and TALCB are a self-directed semi-independent (SDSI) agency, collectively and hereinafter referred to as the “Agency.” TREC licenses and regulates real estate brokers and sales agents, home inspectors, easement and right-of-way agents, residential service companies, timeshare developers, and education providers. TALCB is an independent subdivision of TREC that licenses and regulates real estate appraisers and appraisal management companies as required under state and federal law.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of leading organizations and managing change in a complex environment while balancing stakeholder interests through proactive communication.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Significant knowledge of real estate and appraisal regulations and practices in Texas
- Knowledge of Texas home inspector and timeshare regulations
- Proven ability to respond proactively to changing regulatory environment

- Skilled at identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
- Skilled at using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusion, or approaches to problems, and in reconciling differences

- Ability to balance the oversight of day-to-day operations and administration, while representing the Agency to foster relationships with external stakeholders

- Directs the day-to-day operations of the Commission and the Board, including oversight of major, complex, and functionally-related areas organized into multiple departments and/or divisions
- Oversees the Agency financial resources, including the preparation of annual budgets and long-range forecasting and fiscal planning
- Maintains a high quality of customer service to license holders and members of the public
- Leads the Agency’s strategic planning process and implementation of strategic plans
- Leads efforts in pursuit of the goals, objectives, and mission of the Agency
- Provides information, advice, and counsel to Commissioners and Board Members in the planning, development, and operation of Agency services; keeps the Commissioners and Board Members informed on policy issues and operations of interest across the Agency
- Represents the Agency in meetings with legislators, legislative staff, and other legislative liaisons; provides testimony before legislative committees
- Represents and speak on behalf of the Agency before stakeholder groups, trade organizations, and other entities or members of the public
- Supervises the work of others, including staff at the executive level and/or management level
- Performs other duties as directed by the Commission or Board

Environmental & Physical Conditions: Normal office work environment, mostly sedentary in nature. May involve walking; standing; remaining stationary for long periods of time; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping and bending; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work involves extensive telephone usage and repetitive hand/wrist/finger motions while using the computer.
